I can hear it now, what is Carpet Jello? Well, it’s pretty tasty with a mild nutty flavor, but not for everyone! There are a variety of flavors to choose from such as a green “Frieze” or a pink “Polyester” made from a synthetic fiber and goes down smooth! Reality check…just kidding…DON’T EAT CARPET PEOPLE!

On a more serious note, your probably wondering, what is “Carpet Jello”? Is there really such thing? The answer is Yes, but commonly referred to as carpet delamination. This is where the carpet backing (ie: latex backing) separates from the fiber. Basically, the carpet becomes weak and delaminates. This causes the carpet to wrinkle/buckle and will move under your feet like JELLO! I know…i know…who cares and why is this important?

For most, this topic will never be discussed, but it should be! Here’s why, carpet is like anything else as it’s a wear item. Yep, like tires on your car it eventually wears out! The question is, how long will your tires (ie carpet) last? For most, the question is not asked because it’s not common to do so! Think of it this way, you don’t purchase a car with asking about the warranty! Well, why is carpet any different?

Here’s the nuts and bolts of why this matters:

  1. Feel and Comfort – Typically, a higher quality carpet will have a more rigid latex backing. This can make the carpet feel firm when walked on. Whereas, a less expensive carpet will be the exact opposite from a comfort perspective.

  2. Longevity- Your more expensive carpet will use a high-density latex backing which keeps the carpet rigid for a longer period of time. This will also reduce the risks of delamination “Carpet Jello” in high traffic areas.

  3. Value & Time – To some this might not matter, but to most it does. I don’t know many people that like to throw money in the trash, so the longer your carpet lasts is money you save! Also, moving all your furniture and paying someone to do so costs money.

  4. Cosmetic Appearance – Have you ever seen an old worn out carpet with wrinkles? Yep, makes the carpet look horrible and unappealing!

  5. Installation – Carpet with a high-density latex backing will install better! The carpet is stronger and holds to the tack better over time. When the carpet backing turns to JELLO from delamination, the carpet will ripple and pull from the tack. Also, once rippled, the carpet will become loose and stretch. Therefore, the carpet will be unable to hold a tight stretch to the tack.

Some say that excessive carpet cleaning can delaminate carpet. The answer is NO, unless the carpet is cleaned improperly! Any carpet cleaned improperly can cause stretching, which over time can cause delamination. This only occurs when a technician uses excessive heat and manipulates the carpet too much! When carpet is cleaned properly using the correct technique, products and temperatue range, this will NOT happen! Your can clean your carpet as much as you want done correctly! Hope this helps.
