For pet odor, is there a “Quick Fix”?

In short: Yes … and no!

What Is Pet Odor, and Why Is It So Difficult to Remove?

Most are unsuccessful in removing pet odor because they do not understand the connection between bacterial growth and odor. Therefore, people try many different retail products to remove pet odor unsuccessfully!

Let’s answer this pet odor debacle with a similar question that you might be more familiar with: Why does a trash dumpster smell horrible?

Most would say “Rotten Trash” and they would be correct … for the most part! As food spoils it goes through an initial bacterial growth cycle called decay, which is basically nature’s own way of breaking down food solids. Eventually, the decay will decompose and the bacteria will die.  Apply Chlorine Bleach to the bottom of your trash can works so well at eliminating odor because it destroys the bacteria. A messy situation minus bacteria equals no more odor.

Pet odor is no different!

Applying deodorizers in a fancy bottle will NOT get rid pet odor. Eventually, it will smell like deodorizer and urine combined to make another funky odor. Using more natural solutions such as lemons, limes and oranges will produce a better result without the toxicity that solvents and detergents contain. The high acidic rate and natural citrus oils combined help in reducing pet odor significantly.

Part of the problem is staying on top of the pet stains when they occur, as much as possible. Although as pet owners ourselves, we know that dogs and cats will always find ways in private to do their business. You cannot take the Dog out of the dog! Here is a basic tip on how to control urine odor, although you will need to have the carpet professionally cleaned for urine removal.

First, you will need to find the soiled areas. You can use a black light, but they can be misleading as well. Typically, a urine stain will have little droplets around the stain from dribble (urine droplets).Your nose is a pretty safe bet and will work as a last resort. Once you have found the urine stain, follow these steps:

  1. If soiled area is still wet, soak up with white terry cloth towel (never use towel with color). Stand on the towel (while wearing shoes!) to soak-up as much urine as possible. Don’t worry about pushing the urine into the padding; it’s probably already there anyway. Soak-up until carpet shows no more signs of moisture.
  2. Mix a natural solution of lemon juice and water. Take a 32oz spray bottle (which you can buy at Lowes or Home Depot) and fill with 12 ounces of cool water. Next, mix 3 ounces of lemon juice (use a real lemon only – NOT CONCENTRATE) and shake gently to mix.
  3. Put the spray nozzle in stream mode and place the nozzle onto the surface of the carpet. Pull the trigger and inject the solution into the carpet backing and gently manipulate the spread solution into soiled area. Let the solution remain for a few minutes (time depends on severity of odor) to deodorize and acidic rate to emulsify soil. Then extract with white terry cloth towel. Extract until there is no visible moisture.
  4. This is your rinse cycle. Dispose of the lemon juice solution and fill bottle with cold water. Put the spray nozzle into stream mode and inject like in step 3. Extract immediately! Repeat process until desired results are achieved. Make sure all moisture is extracted as much as possible. Your done, leave alone to dry.

Once you’ve completed these steps, your pet’s stains should smell much better, and leave behind a gentle tone of citrus, if done properly. The instructions above are basic guidelines on how to control urine odor. All pet stains are different sizes           with different saturation levels. Solution concentration levels can be adjusted to meet desired results. Caution: Natural Citrus Juices are highly acidic and can cause discoloration if used improperly!
