Essential oils are an amazing, powerful, and natural way to clean and deodorize your house of stubborn odors. If you have children or pets, this is the greener way to go, since you don’t have all the harsh chemical additives that are found in the majority of store-bought cleaners. You can make your own D.I.Y room deodorizer with just a few simple ingredients!

How to Make A Room Freshener Using Essential Oils

  • Water
  • Vodka
  • Essential Oils of your choosing

Vodka is great to use for cleaning because it leaves no scent when used as a natural cleaner. Vodka is clear and leaves no residue, unlike baking soda. Distilled vinegar can have a strong lingering smell after it’s used.  Vodka is naturally antibacterial, anti-fungal, as well as being a natural deodorizer. This grain-based liquor performs many of the same tasks as vinegar. It’s a great cleaning alternative for anyone who is smell or chemically sensitive.

Mix together in a glass spray bottle

  • 1 cup of distilled water
  • ½ cup of bottom shelf/cheap vodka
  • 10 – 12 drops essential oils of your choice

Some of my favorite essential oils to use for a room freshener include lavender, peppermint, frankincense, bergamot, and wild orange. (If you’re going to mix various oils, just make sure to keep the ratio 10-12 drops).

Lavender is a powerful antibacterial and has amazing calming and soothing aromatherapy benefits.

Peppermint has a potent, herbaceous, minty aroma that is wonderful for eliminating foul odors.

Frankincense is one of the oldest essential oils dating back thousands of years. There is archaeological evidence that Frankincense was used as a medicinal substance in antiquity. Frankincense is a proven antiseptic with inflammatory properties.

A high-quality Wild orange essential oil is high is monoterpenes, and possesses stimulating and purifying qualities. It’s wonderful to use as an all-purpose cleaner. It protects against seasonal and environmental threats. Wild orange is also high in antioxidants which is essential for overall health.
