Nature’s Miracle® Stain and Odor Remover is a cleaning product that is meant to not only clean up pet accidents in carpet and upholstery, but also to remove stains and odor, making it less likely that you pet will mistake the spot for a bathroom again.

Here’s how the solution is supposed to work:

To ensure that pet stains are removed altogether, take a dry washcloth and press down firmly onto your pet’s puddle. You want to press down deeply to get as much of the urine out of the carpet padding as you can. If left unattended, the urine in the padding with permeate an unpleasant and uninviting odor.

Note: Do not “wipe” at the puddle. You may end up spreading it around or pushing it deeper into your carpet.

Once the accident itself is cleaned up, spray or pour (as Nature’s Miracle® comes in different containers) an amount of cleaning solution that is equal to the amount of urine on your carpet or upholstery.

Let the solution sit for five minutes, allowing it to soak into the carpet padding itself to thoroughly remove the ammonia, eliminating the odor and keeping your pet from returning to the spot. Then, with a new, clean washcloth, wipe the remaining solution and stain away.

Ta-da! The stain and smell are gone! It’s a miracle!

The self-described “miracle” depends wholly upon the notion that this product does exactly what it says it does … but how well does Nature’s Miracle® work exactly? Is it worth the price (ranged from $9.99 to $44.99)? Is there a product out there that works better or just as well at a better rate?

Here’s all our research on the subject, laid bare:

The Pros

  • It’s not just for pets! It also works on “grass stains, mud, vomit, blood and odors.”
  • It works on carpet and hard surfaces
  • It comes in different sizes
  • You can have a “miracle” on any budget.

Most customers of Nature’s Miracle® are so satisfied with the product that they went as far as to give it a five-star rating. Several people testified that Nature’s Miracle® worked its magic on their carpet and upholstery: People potty-training puppies and kittens verified that the stain was removed and the odor was gone. Their pets never returned to the scene of the crime.

What’s more: A few people said that there had been stains (from both pet- and people-accidents alike) from previous home owners or renters, and that Nature’s Miracle® was able to remove these old stains as well. People have also used this product to get rid of paint, mud, grass stains and whole other world of messes.

Even better: Because Nature’s Miracle® comes in many different sizes and containers, you can purchase just as much “miracle” as you need without bending your budget.

The Cons

  • The spray bottles do not seem to work as well as the gallon sizes
  • The cleaner may not penetrate all the way to the padding, leaving you with the odor
  • The formula changed in 2003

Although most people rated this product five-stars, there were a few who went as far as to give it three or sometimes even only one star because of how dissatisfied they were with the product. But where does the discrepancy lie? How can there be such a big difference in opinion of this product?

Well, from what we can tell, many of the people who were dissatisfied with Nature’s Miracle® were using the spray bottle instead of the gallon. When spraying the affected area on carpet or upholstery, it’s not as easy to measure or (let’s be real here) “eyeball” the amount of solution you’re applying to the urine-soaked fabric. You may not be able to penetrate deep into the carpet fibers, down into the carpet padding with the spray nozzle, and if you’re not able to do that, the “miracle” will not work for you.

Another reason people were dissatisfied with Nature’s Miracle® was because they had been avid users prior to 2003. This is what happened: Nature’s Miracle® was once a product that worked under a specific enzyme destroying formula, but in 2003, the person who invented the solution and the company itself parted ways. Nature’s Miracle® kept the same name, although their solution had changed, and the old solution went on to become Petastic®.

The people who had used the product before the change loved it and wanted the same results that they had had before, but didn’t get them. Once they found out about Petastic®, they immediately dropped Nature’s Miracle® and suggested that others do the same.

The Gray Area

Sure, you can get Nature’s Miracle® on any budget—if you only have $10 to spend, you can get a small spray bottle—but the spray bottle does not produce the same effects as the gallon container. You may as well spend the extra $30 on the gallon if you want better results. If that’s the case, are you really able to get a “miracle” on any budget? Or are you only able to purchase the name and label for that amount?

Nature’s Miracle changed solutions in 2003, and the people who created the original enzyme formula changed the name of their product to Petastic®. Now, Petastic® changed names again and is part of the Earth Friendly Products®. The product has reviews as good as Nature’s Miracle, and at a much cheaper price ($5.99 to $18.00 on their website).

However, one of the customer reviews that we came across online stated that the product stained his Berber Wool carpet. We haven’t come across any other instances in which this recurred; nonetheless, we recommend that you test the product on a small part of the carpet before splashing the whole dosage on there.

The Bottom Line

Nature’s Miracle® works great—but so does Earth Friendly Products® and at half the price. It sounds to us that what you’re really paying so much more money for with Nature’s Miracle® is the branding. Save yourself some money and go with Earth Friendly Products®. But, for goodness sake, be sure to test the product on a small piece of carpet or fabric before applying all of it.

Either way, no matter how much pet stain and odor remover you use, you still need to have your carpet professionally cleaned at least once a year—twice if the accidents happen frequently.

But enough from us: Tell us what you think. If you’ve used Nature’s Miracle®, Petastic® or Earth Friendly Products®, let us know how it worked out for you in the comments.
