Do you have pets in your household? Dogs spend majority of their time when they are in your house on the carpet. Over time, your carpet can start retaining foul odors from high traffic, and definitely from your furry friends.  There are some do-it-yourself techniques you can do, in order to get your carpet back smelling fresh and clean.

–          Keep your carpets as clean as you can! The cleaner you keep them, the less bacteria will start building up in the carpet fibers. It’s recommended to vacuum frequently. For areas with extremely high traffic, vacuuming daily is best. For other areas, vacuum routinely 2 or more times a week.

–          On your front porch and patio, place a door mat for people to wipe their shoes on. This will greatly reduce the chance of people tracking things from the bottom of their shoes inside your home.

–          You can purchase store bought carpet deodorizer, but this is much more expensive than using something you probably already have in your kitchen. Baking soda has great cleaning and deodorizing properties. Using this deodorizing technique is so simple, and non-toxic, which is wonderful especially if you have children or pets.

How to Deodorize your Carpet Using Baking Soda

  1. Take your package of baking soda and sprinkle it liberally over the musty, foul areas. Make sure to thoroughly and evenly coat the carpet.

  1. The trick to eliminating the foulest odors is to let it sit overnight, or for as long as you possibly can.

  1. After allowing the baking soda to soak into the carpet fibers, get your vacuum. Vacuum over the treated area comprehensively. You might need to repeat this process a few times, in order to pick up all the excess baking soda.

  1. If odors still have a faint smell, you can repeat this process. Remember after you vacuum, the bag will begin to feel heavy from all the powder. You might need to empty out your bag, or replace it with a new one.

  1. Voilà! Your carpets should smell fresh, and far from how they used to smell.

This method is an effortless, do-it-yourself task that works and won’t cost you an arm and a leg!
